Halloween Pet Safety Tips
Halloween hijinks can bring smiles to many faces, but spooky fun isn’t for everyone—or every pet. Between Halloween costumes, tempting candy, and the constant cacophony of a ringing doorbell, your pet might find Halloween to be far more trick than treat. However, with a few simple precautions, you can ensure your pets stay safe, calm on Halloween.
Candy and Chocolate
Let’s be honest, your dog thinks that candy bowl is definitely for him. But Halloween candy, especially anything containing chocolate or xylitol (a common sugar substitute in sugar-free gum and some candies), is toxic to pets.
Candy Wrappers and Sticks
The danger to your pets isn’t limited to the candy itself. Wrappers and lollipop sticks are a significant hazard, too. If dogs or cats chew or swallow them, it can cause choking, internal blockages, or severe digestive upset. For your pet’s safety, always make sure all wrappers and sticks are disposed of securely and kept completely out of reach.
Keep all treats out of paw’s reach. Make sure your guests—especially kids—know not to share their candy haul with the animals. If your pet does sneak a snack, call us right away or contact the ASPCA’s Poison Control Hotline.
Halloween Costumes
We love a good pet costume as much as anyone. However not every dog or cat wants to channel their inner taco or superhero. If your pet seems stressed, uncomfortable, or restricted in their costume, it’s best to skip it. Always check that Halloween costumes don’t block vision, restrict breathing or movement, and don’t have any loose pieces that could be chewed off and swallowed. A festive bandana or themed collar is a great alternative for costume-averse pets.
What the Front Door
Trick-or-treaters are fun, but repeated doorbell rings and new faces can be very stressful for pets. Some dogs and cats may try to bolt when the door opens. Keep your pet secured in a quiet room during peak trick-or-treating hours, and turn on the TV or some soft music to mask the commotion.
Check That Pet ID
When it comes to pet Halloween safety, one of the most important things you can do before any event is to double-check your pet ID. Make sure your pet’s microchip is registered with up-to-date contact info. Make sure their collar tag is legible and securely attached. In the off chance your pet escapes, a proper pet ID dramatically increases the chances of a safe return home.
Halloween Decorations & Fire Hazards
That flickering candle inside your jack-o’-lantern? A hazard for curious paws. The same goes for string lights, fake cobwebs, glow sticks, and anything that looks like a chew toy. Supervise your pet around decorations, and opt for pet-safe alternatives when possible.
Have Pet-Safe Treats
Skip the toxic human candy and use Halloween as the perfect excuse to spoil your pet with safe, pet-approved treats.
Safe Swap Ideas:
- For Dogs: Pumpkin or xylitol-free peanut butter dog biscuits, or DIY frozen pumpkin-yogurt “pupsicles.”
- For Cats: Catnip toys or irresistible freeze-dried salmon treats.
- For Both: Crunchy training treats presented in a spooky container!
